Osler is a UK-based diagnostics company on a mission to empower people worldwide to access, understand and use their health data to live healthier, happier and longer lives.
Founded out of the University of Oxford in 2017, Osler builds on decades of pioneering research by the department behind the portable electrochemical blood glucose sensor.
Its product, the Osler Origin, is a portable lab designed to deliver a comprehensive range of lab-quality diagnostic tests anytime, anywhere, across major healthcare settings worldwide.
Mapping the user journey and interactions across the system to identify pain-points and opportunities, followed by brainstorming concepts to address insights.


Tested clickable prototypes, observed and interviewed participants to understand users, workflows and use environments. This identified user needs and product requirements to inform the design.
Low resolution user interface and user experience concepts were developed to fulfill the user needs and product requirements.

The Analyser Industrial Design was developed through sketching to define the position of components, while refining the design. The sketches shown explored the relationship between display, bezel and enclosure chamfer.

Further refinement of the Industrial Design through 2D illustrations. The design explored the position of a barcode scanner, illuminated bar, RFID scanner and cartridge door position.

Through collaboration with the mechanical engineering team, a series of prototypes were created during the design phase, allowing the design to be refined. The images show the progression of the design through prototyping.


A low fidelity, fully integrated Analyser prototype with clickable screens was tested with users to assess the usability of the full system.
The user interface, user experience and system design was developed in Figma to allow handover to software developers. During this phase, Pathway Design worked closely with the Product Manager, System and Software teams to refine the design and capture requirements for the logic of the system.

The full Osler Origin system which encompassed the Analyser, Test Cartridge, User Manual and Package Leaflet was tested with real users, facilitated by an external Human Factors Engineering consultancy.

The overall system scored 87.2 (excellent) on the System Usability Scale (SUS).
